Address Book Server Enterprise Edition
With Address Book Server you can synchronise your Address Book with others on the same network as well as over the internet. Contacts are synchronised with your own instance of Address Book Server.
Address Book Server comes in two parts a server and a client. The server should be installed on a centrally accessible Mac. The client goes on every Mac, whose Address Book you would like to synchronise.
During synchronisation contact information is fetched from the ABS server, compared with the local content, and any changes are written back to the server. Changes made via Address Book are synchronised in real-time with the server. Other clients will be brought up-to-date during their next synchronisation. This can either be done by making a change to one of their contacts, manually via System Preferences or on a schedule.
Compare Editions

Release - 25th August 2008
The enterprise edition has replaced the standard edition in the download package. As it offers more features then the standard edition, there is very little reason to continue support two different versions of the same product. To reduce confusion, the standard edition will be phased out. It will remain available on demand.
Support for synchronising a subset of contacts already shared on the server. Prior to this release, all contacts already shared with the server were automatically subscribed to by the client. From this release going forward it is now possible to select a subset of groups from the server.
The server discovery mechanism has been improved to find multiple server on your network. Each client is only able to synchronise with one Address Book Server at a time however.
SSL support has been added to the client to ensure the security of remote connections. Instructions for generating your own server certificate have been added to the manual.

Thunderbird and Vista Support
It is a long term goal to also support other platforms such as Linux and Vista, not only on the server side, but also on the client. This will most likely result in a Thunderbird and Vista Contacts client. However currently this is still a while off. If you are a developer and would like to get involved in this project please let us know.
