Super GHOST
Brief Description:
Mac version 2.0.0 and Windows XP version 2.0.0 let the user maintain his own word set.
Super GHOST is a computer (solitaire) version of the age-old game in which you try to add a letter to the beginning or the ending of existing letters without making a word; one and two letter words do not count. If you make a word, you get a letter (the first letter is "G"). When you have all five letters ("GHOST"), you lose.
You play against the computer. Above you see two small boxes on the computer side and two more small boxes on your side. The left box is where you click to enter a letter to be played before the existing letters. The right box is where you click to enter a letter to be played after the existing letters. If the computer cannot add a letter without making a word, it takes a letter immediately. You can "challenge" the computer by clicking on the "I Challenge" button. The computer's word will be displayed and you will take a letter. If you catch the computer bluffing, the computer will take a point.
Above you see a game underway. The player has entered an "a" in the left player box and an "a" has been inserted at the beginning of the "Spelling so far" field. At this point, the player has one letter and the computer has no letters.
Above you see the player has four letters and has challenged the computer. The spelling so far is "exace" and the word was exacerbate. The player has just earned another letter and the computer will win the game without a single letter. Don't fret; it is possible (but difficult) to beat the computer.
The default Super GHOST word set includes over 80,000 American English words. The Word Maintenance window lets you look at the word set and add/delete words, save the words to a simple text file and load a simple text file. Changes to the word set are saved automatically when you close the Word Maintenance window. The default word set is used if you clear the table and close the Word Maintenance window. If you wish to make your own simple text file, TextEdit (Mac) and NotePad (Windows XP) are excellent for this purpose. Use plain text format and save with Unicode (UTF-8) encoding with ".txt" suffix. This file must have one word per line.
